Modernizing a Home While Restoring the Original Charm

058The technology associated with home remodeling has created more opportunities than ever before for energy efficient, cost saving solutions that fit seamlessly into a home. While this might seem like a logical step for newer homes, people with older abodes shouldn’t hesitate to explore cutting edge options for upgrading. With the right approach, you can maintain an air of vintage authenticity combined with the comforts of modern living.

Peak Construction recently performed a complete overhaul of the roofing on a 1920s Cape Cod, in Peekskill, NY, to outfit it with a more contemporary system while simultaneously restoring the original look and feel of the home.

The house was encumbered with a few notable issues. The roof had very minimal insulation and was costing the homeowners a fair bit of money. Cape Cod’s also have a characteristically small eave, but the home had been altered to have a significantly larger one. The layers of wood siding and aluminum siding also posed an additional challenge to work with.

027To address the insulation problem, Peak had to do a full-scale gutting of the sheet rock on the top floor of the home. When this was done they retrofitted it with wholesale spray foam insulation. The roof was completely redone, including reinforcing the rafters to provide an extra layer of support. New plywood was added to the roof deck to help this as well. When this was all finished the interior was rebuilt as it was before.

074Peak replaced the old layers of wood and aluminum on the exterior of the home with brand new fresh James Hardie pre-finished fiber cement siding, which comes complete with a 20 year warranty, about double the standard for other siding manufacturers. The eave was modified to embody a more traditional Cape Cod style and Azek PVC trim was added to finish off the overall look of the newly redesigned home.

The entire job took about 3 weeks, but the energy savings will last much longer. By combining a collection of the highest-end materials on the market today with a focus on returning the classic Cape Cod style, Peak Construction was able to provide the homeowners with a modern, comfortable and efficient home that retained all of its old-fashioned charm.
